If you are posting a story on FF.net, it is not an official novelization. Please do not call it that in your summary.

Janto Song List

  • Dec. 15th, 2009 at 12:47 PM
I was wondering what sort of songs any of you have for Jack and Ianto's relationship?

I have a song list on my iPod, Tosh for Jack and Ianto but they're all mostly miserable apart from the odd happy one. I know they didn't have the most ideal relationship given all of Jack's secrets but it wasn't all miserable either. Some are from how I see Ianto's pov while others are obviously Jack's :)

So the question is what songs do you all think match Jack and/or Ianto for any reason?

Three incredibly fandom-specific mini-rants

  • Dec. 14th, 2009 at 5:34 PM
Hopefully this is allowed here, first time posting >.>

Rant 1: If your character is a Death Knight, they have to be dead. No really, they do. It's in the title, for Pete's sake. Didn't you play the starting zone? I can't count how many times they emphsized that you were, in fact, dead. You're a fallen hero, remember? Purchased a new dawn for the world with your life, remember? Dead. You are it. No exceptions

Rant 2: The Lich King, canonically, has no soul, and thus could not take pity on your belf and spare her life and make her his super-special apprentice/adoptive daughter/sex slave. Not that the Lich King would, because she's also whiny, sex-obsessed, and constantly needs to be in the spotlight. In fact, he'd probably punt her off of Icecrown the moment he saw her. Please catch up on lore or gtfo.

Rant 3: Relating to the dead-thing, if your character has been raised by the Scourge, chances are she's not going to be happy-go-lucky giggly-peppy all the time. Chances are she's going to have more worries than "Omg! The Scourge totally took all my clothes so now I have to buy new ones, bummer!". I hate to ask this, but more angst would be very welcome, thanks.

TL;DR: No Death Knight sues, please D:

Two different fics.

"Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?" is not a summary. It's not even a teaser. If you don't want to write a summary, don't write a summary, but don't hum at us.

Also, this is just a little thing that's been niggling at me, but if you're writing in a low-science 'verse, you might want to avoid describing something as against "the laws of physics", for tone reasons. It's not a huge deal, but "the laws of nature" would sounds better in-context, and means close enough to the same thing for your purposes.

The Dark is Rising

  • Dec. 14th, 2009 at 11:14 PM
Writing fic for The Dark is Rising fandom does not automatically make me a paedophile.

For one thing, this fandom lends itself well to genfic. For another, there are adult characters that I ship. John Rowlands/Owen Davies, anyone? No? And finally, when I write anything adult for the fandom, the characters are aged up as appropriate.

Now if I was writing about Bran Davies and Barney Drew having sex at the age they are in canon, you'd have more of a case. But I haven't, and won't.

Dear Fic Author(s):

500-800 words is not a chapter. It's debatable whether it even counts as an entire scene.

You write a pairing I like in a fandom I enjoy lurking in. Your plots are very good, your characterization's a touch fluffier than I like, but still within the range of what I find believable in the hands of a good writer, and you're pretty much the only person on the internet who writes Minor Character X Whom I Adore (okay, in a minor character supporting capacity, but still, X's name is mentioned, whee!).

But holy Zombie Jebus, your short-enough-to-practically-be-drabbles chapters make your fics almost unreadable. In a short (under 5,000 words) fic that was presented stylistically as a series of linked drabbles or ficlets, it would work brilliantly, but I cannot read a 15,000-20,000+ word fic written in "chapters" of 500-800 words. I just can't. Not even for Minor Character X.

You have the bones of a good story lying there in most of your fics, but it's like reading a well-put-together fic outline. I want to grab a red pen and scrawl "EXPAND EXPAND EXPAND" across every scene.

And this rant could apply to dozens of writers in at least ten fandoms I read in. Fiction Alley, back in the day, wouldn't accept chapters of less than 2,000 words for their novel-length fic archive. I don't think going that far's actually a good idea, because sometimes you *need* that one super-short scene or chapter for impact, but surely y'all not posting a 15,000-word fic in twenty-five "chapters" of 600 words each isn't too much to ask for. Can you at least collect a few of your short chapter/scenes together and post two or three of them at once? (some writers do do this, and while I still often find their uber-short scenes annoying, at least it cuts down on the number of times readers have to click "next" and/or hunt through their journal for the next part).

edit: I'm not talking about drabbles, short one-shot fics, or any other complete-in-and-of-itself short piece of fiction. Just long fics presented as if the author is writing a Burma Shave advertisement.

I don't know what sound there is when someone's water breaks, or even if there is a sound. But when you wrote there was a *pop* sound, it made me picture something like a champagne bottle. And when the baby apparently tore loose mom's uterus by wrapping his tail around it... I don't think I've ever been thrown out of a fic that suddenly before.

Other author, ice melts. When teeny, tiny shards of ice ends up in someone's eyes, they'll melt. After several hours there won't be any need to remove them anymore.
Dear FF.net Reviewer,

This is only a minor annoyance, I know. It's not a big deal in the great scheme of things. I know that, too. But I really feel the need to point something out to you:

Under the cut for lengthy rant )

And no, I'm not re-writing the damn thing to make you happy.

Please go away and stop reading the story if you feel that strongly about it,

Moi

Pee. Ess. — I know it's minor in the grand scheme of things, but really the entitlement here is a bit boggling.

Ok, so a woman hasn't been sexually active in 3 years. I can seez that. And then she has sex. I can seez that too. And there was no condom involved.

And then she thinks, thank God for Birth Control!

Because of course she'd take birth control when she's sexually inactive for three years, just because.*

* It was never mentioned that she had a medical problem that required her to take birth control.

ETA: Character is a very un-shy med student who despises taking meds and going to doctors. And the fic itself is very detailed, enough to merit such a description! {or, the beta's job to say 'whut?'}

ETA 2: A clarification: the canon is Inuyasha. Which is set in Japan. In which the most commonly used method for birth control is condoms. Not the entire world sticks by Western ideals. The Pill was legalised in 1999. Apparently, less than 2% of the women of child-bearing age used it in 2004. I'm assuming the fic is set in 2006. This isn't about the character using birth control, or safe sex, or pregnancy: This is about the writer doing her research and assuming that people in Japan hold the same ideals and habits as people from the US.

Um, no.

...I'm bad at summaries but trust that this is a good storie.

I'm going to have a rather difficult time doing that when you misspelled story in your summary.

Fuck you fanfiction person!

  • Dec. 14th, 2009 at 11:02 PM
Dear random fanfic.net person,
Thank you for leaving nice reviews on my latest fic. It was very appreciated & you gave a piece of great constructive critisism. I even edited my fic because of it. So thank you again.

But you know what, generally it stops here. It was nice when you messaged back saying I had a great favourites list. I don't know why you needed to tell me this, but a compliment is a compliment.

But no no, you don't need to send me rec's. It is appreciated but that's ok, I probably won't have time to read them anyway.

Ok now why are you sending me het rec's? Especially after I told you thanks, but no thanks. Can't you see that I'm a slash fan for starters? Did you really not read my favourites list? It's all quite obvious, honestly.

Oh, I have a couple of het stories faved? Really, I must have forgotten. Oh yes, now I remember. They were from House of Wax and were the only het I've read in nearly 10 years. Why? Because Chad Michael Murray + twincest = sexy. I can forget that it's his twin sister for that fandom.

Ok now seriously. Stop. Just stop.

Did you just send me One Tree Hill het recs? You can't "convert" me to het fiction, so don't bother trying.

Stop.

No really. Stop.

FUCKING STOP ALREADY YOU WEIRD-ASS FUCKING HEADCASE!

Seduction Moves (16/17)

  • Dec. 14th, 2009 at 10:42 AM

Title: Seduction Moves: Sixteenth Move
Summary: Where Ianto has an interesting idea, and everybody else plays along.
Characters: Jack Harknerss, Ianto Jones, John Hart, Gwen Cooper
Rating: Overall NC-17 (I think... I'm bad with ratings)
Spoilers: Season 2 and a brief mention of "The Dead Line"
Warnings: See the series introductory post for warnings.
Disclaimer: Torchwood and all the characters belong to Russell T. Davies and the BBC. No copyright infringement intended, although a custody battle seems appropriate after July 2009. No money is being made. I'm not even getting my usual dose of sanity out of this.
Betas: [info]kirvash and [info]shdwfyre37, both of whom deserve a standing ovation for going through this epic with me, and encouraging me when I wanted to throw the towel, and putting up with absolute rewrites, unexpected twists and my mania of giving them misleading summaries (insert evil laughter here).

See the series introductory post for previous chapters.
Chapter 16 over at my LJ

why.

  • Dec. 14th, 2009 at 10:51 AM
Dear author, why did you write a fanfiction about a videogame you never played or watched someone play/a LP? It was easy to tell from the story itself, but you even admitted it on your a/n saying you just thought the characters were cool and wanted to write about them.
Just sayin', but reading Wikipedia would have helped you not make those glaring canon mistakes you did.
Do you even know anything about these characters other than their names?

ETA: to clarify a small detail.
